MILWAUKEE --One final weekend of competition remains for the Marquette University track and field squad as certain individuals attempt to reach NCAA Regional qualifying standards.
"We have several student-athletes who are just below the regional mark and this weekend is their last chance to qualify," said head coach Bert Rogers. "With finals behind us and the summer break started, we have been able to focus 100 percent on training. The meets at Georgia Tech and Louisville offer terrific opportunities to get the regional mark. It is now or never."
Traveling to the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., are sophomores Peter Bolgert and Tyler O'Brien along with freshman Blake Johnson. Bolgert and Johnson will participate Friday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:15 p.m. ET, while O'Brien will run in the 200-meter dash final at 5:15 p.m. ET on Saturday. Live scoring for the Georgia Tech Invitational will be provided by Delta Timing and will be available on RamblinWreck.com.
Scott Mueller, Nick Szczech and Carly Windt will all take part in the 5,000 meters at the Gregory Invitational, hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Ill. Also competing will be thrower Jessica Ehlen, the only student-athlete to already qualify for the NCAA Regionals in competition this weekend.
The rest of the travel party will be competing at the Cardinal Twilight, hosted by BIG EAST rival Louisville on Friday afternoon. The men at the Cardinal Twilight will be freshman David Carbajal in the discus and shot put, junior Jeff Kluge in the discus and sophomore Nick Byom in the high jump. Eight women will also be competing, including junior Rachel Thiel in the shot put, who qualified for the Regionals in the event last year.
Freshman heptathlete Lauren Benjamin will throw javelin at Louisville and is attempting to reach the United States Junior National qualifying mark of 40.50 meters (132 feet, 10 inches).
The athletes who record NCAA Regional qualifying standards, will compete Fri., May 29 at the NCAA Mideast Regional, again in Louisville, Ky.
Results will be available on GoMarquette.com following completion of the weekend's competition.
