MILWAUKEE- The Marquette women's volleyball team was picked to finish sixth in the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, officials announced Friday. The Golden Eagles recorded a total of 119 points to finish right behind perennial BIG EAST power St. John's in the balloting.

Louisville (186 points) was once again picked to lead the league, garnering six first-place votes, followed by Cincinnati and Notre Dame, both with 178 points. USF, with BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Marcela Gurgel, was picked to finish fourth. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team or players.

After MU tied for 11th place in the 15-team league in 2008, new head coach Bond Shymansky took control of the program and brought eight new players to Milwaukee for 2009. Included in that group are former Fab 50 recruit Nikki Klingsporn, a transfer from Wisconsin, high school all-America Carol Henney from nearby Burlington, Wis. and junior college all-America Ashley Beyer, who led the NJCAA in kills at Kishwaukee (Ill.) College.

The preseason ranking is the highest recorded by Marquette since the 2007 squad ranked fifth in the preseason poll. Of the five schools listed above MU, the Golden Eagles will face Louisville, Cincinnati and St. John's on the road.
