Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures to lead the Marquette women's basketball team over Villanova, 71-54, at the Pavilion Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 12-6 overall, 3-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Wildcats stand 10-6 overall and winless in league action (0-4).
Junior guard Angel Robinson led Marquette's balanced attack with a game-high 16 points, while sophomore Jessica Pachko added 14, and senior Lauren Thomas Johnson and freshman Sarina Simmons contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Golden Eagles got nearly half of their points in the paint as it outscored Villanova, 34-8, and owned a 39-17 advantage on the glass. For the game, Marquette shot 48.0 percent (24-of-50), including a 57.1 shooting percentage in the second half.
Emily Suhey scored a team-high 15 points for the Wildcats who made 19-of-47 attempts (40.4 percent) overall.
With Villanova leading 9-8 seven minutes into the game, Marquette jumped on a 11-0 run over the next five minutes to own a 19-9 lead with 8:36 to play. Suhey drained four consecutive three pointers to bring Villanova back and take a brief one-point lead, 26-25, with 2:43 remaining in the half.
Robinson hit a jumper and Pachko made a pair of free throws to end the first half and go into the locker room with a three-point advantage, 29-26. Pachko and Robinson finished the first half with eight points apiece, while Pachko also poured in five rebounds and two assists.
After Villanova opened the second half with its seventh triple of the game to tie the score 29-29, the Golden Eagles went on a pivotal 8-0 run over the next three minutes to lead, 37-29, with 16:07 to play. From there, the Wildcats cut MU's lead to three points on two occasions, but that was as close as they would come.
The Golden Eagles took its largest lead of the game, 17 points (62-45) with 4:12 remaining in the game.
