MIAMI, Fla. - Katherine Plouffe scored 14 points and tied her career high with seven rebounds as the Marquette women's basketball team beat FIU 73-67 in the first round of the 26th annual Sun and Fun Classic on Wednesday night at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
Paige Fiedorowicz added 12 points and nine rebounds for MU, which is now 11-2 and will shoot for its second five-game winning streak of the season in the championship game Thursday at 2 p.m. EST/1 p.m. CST against either Georgia or Louisiana Tech.
Marquette went on runs of 11-2 and 12-3 in the first half and took its biggest lead at 33-17 thanks largely to Plouffe and Sarina Simmons. Each made four of her first five shots.
FIU responded with six straight points as MU went four minutes without scoring. But the Golden Eagles went into the break with a 37-23 advantage as Simmons hit a jumper in the lane with 3.3 seconds left that hit the top of the backboard before rolling around the rim and finally dropping.
Plouffe had 12 points and five rebounds, and Simmons added all 10 of her points by halftime. Courtney Weibel and Gaby Minix each had 3-pointers, with Minix's coming right after she stole the ball on an inbounds pass.
MU was forced to play much of the second half without Angel Robinson, who was called for her second and third fouls just 18 seconds apart. Jasmine Collins helped pick up the slack with three straight baskets and Tatiyiana McMorris hit three 3-pointers and ended with 11 points and seven assists.
FIU got as close as eight on numerous occasions, but Robinson returned at the 10:00 mark and hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down to put MU up 68-57 with 2:54 to play. She finished with 12 points and six assists.
FIU made it interesting down the stretch, hitting two 3-pointers after MU missed the front end of back-to-back one-and-one free-throw opportunities. Jerica Coley of FIU (5-8) led all scorers with 18.
?The Golden Eagles had five players score in double figures for the third time this season and first since they defeated Alcorn State on Nov. 15. Marquette has had at least three players score 10-or-more points in its last three games.
?Paige Fiedorowicz and Katherine Plouffe were two of five players scoring in double figures and it marked the fifth time this season the pair has done so. Marquette is 5-0 when both Plouffe and Fiedorowicz contribute 10 points.
?The Golden Eagles continue to move the ball effectively and registered its third straight game of 20-or-more assists, fifth overall for the season. Marquette is 5-0 when dishing at least 20 assists.
?With three steals against FIU, Angel Robinson passed Krystal Ellis and moved to sole possession of third on the all-time steals list with 242 for her career.
? Marquette finished the game shooting 48.3 percent from the floor its highest road shooting percentage of the season.
? Marquette held as much as a 16-point lead with 4:57 left to play in the first half.
? Courtney Weibel made one of her five 3-point attempts to extend her made 3-pointer streak to seven games.
