Women's Basketball Opens BIG EAST Championship Play Friday Against Villanova

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team will make its fifth appearance in the BIG EAST Conference Championship Presented by New York Life Insurance at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn., March 5-9.

The Golden Eagles (15-14, 6-10 BIG EAST) enter the tournament as the No. 10 seed and will play No. 15 seed Villanova (15-15, 3-13 BIG EAST) in the first round on Friday, March 5, at 6 p.m.ET/5 p.m. CT.

First round games will be available on the BIG EAST's website through the conference's official streaming video platform, BIGEAST.tv. Phil Giubileo (play by play) and Meg Bulger (analyst) will have the call live from the XL Center.

Marquette is 3-3 all-time against Villanova in a series that commenced when the Golden Eagles joined the league in 2005. In the two teams' regular-season meeting, Marquette came out victorious, 71-54, on January 16. Marquette's leading scorer Angel Robinson led the Golden Eagles' balanced attack with a game-high 16 points, while sophomore Jessica Pachko added 14, and senior Lauren Thomas Johnson and freshman Sarina Simmons contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Golden?Eagles and the Wildcats met once before in the first round of the 2006 BIG?EAST?Tournament with Villanova advancing to the quarterfinals, 72-58.

Should Marquette advance to the second round, it would play on Saturday, March 6 at 6 p.m. ET against No. 7 seed DePaul. Second round games are set to air on BIG EAST Regional Television, locally on Sports32, with Justin Kutcher (play by play) and Meg Bulger (analyst) on the call.

A win over the?Blue Demons would pit Marquette No. 2 seed West Virginia in the BIG?EAST?Quarterfinals on Sunday, March 7 at 6 p.m. ET, on ESPNU.

Marquette is 1-4 all-time in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament, and have lost its last three BIG EAST Tournament games. The Golden Eagles' lone win since joining the league in 2005 came over Pittsburgh, 61-51, in the 2007 quarterfinals.
