CINCINNATI - Junior Peter Bolgert recorded the second-fastest steeplechase time in school history, while the Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads wrapped up Saturday's competition at the 2010 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.

"I thought Peter came out and ran a great race," head coach Bert Rogers said. "He ran a smart race and started strong, really working his way up. He and Blake (Johnson) worked together early on but Peter was able to pull away."

Both Bolgert and sophomore Blake Johnson moved their way up the MU top-10 list in the steeplechase during the afternoon.

Bolgert improved upon his personal best with a time of 8:54.76, moving him to second all-time on the MU top-10 list. Bolgert finished fourth in the race, earning the Golden Eagles five points and was followed by Johnson in 10th with a time of 9:05.31. Johnson is now eighth in school history.

Senior Jayne Grebinski, who entered the steeplechase ranked 16th nationally, finished seventh in the event with a time of 10:39.16. Kate Horan also ran and finished 15th.

The women's steeplechase field included five runners ranked ahead of Grebinski on the NCAA list and Rogers feels that will help her during the first round of the NCAA Championships on May 27-29.

"Jayne looked a little flat and never came around," Rogers said. "(Her finish) will sting a little bit because she wanted to do better, but the field was very good and it is good preparation for a similar group that she will face at the NCAAs."

In the field events, senior Carrie Schmid led the way with a second-place finish in the pole vault. Schmid, the Marquette record holder in the event, reached a season-best height of 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches (3.80 meters) to score eight points for the MU women. Teammate Lauren Darnall finished fifth with a height of 11 feet, 9 3/4 inches (3.60 meters).

"Carrie had a great chance to win and had some very good jumps. If she would have gotten her final height on her first or second attempt she would have won the event on a count back," Rogers said.

Senior thrower Jeff Kluge scored four points for the MU men with a fifth-place finish in the discus. Kluge recorded a throw of 168 feet, 11 inches (51.49 meters), coming up just shy of a personal high. Junior Robert Bleem also competed in the discus and finished 11th (152 feet, 2 inches/46.39 meters).

Senior Rachel Thiel placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 14.47 meters (47 feet, 5 3/4 inches) to grab one point for the women.

The women conclude the day in ninth place with 15 points, while the men are 11th with nine points.

"I thought we competed well and I was pretty pleased overall. We had some good stuff which hopefully will carry over to tomorrow's events," Rogers said.

Marquette will begin competition Sunday morning with the men's hammer throw and women's triple jump at 10 a.m. Eastern time. Senior Erynn James will also look to move up the NCAA list in the high jump at 12:30 p.m. ET.
