MILWAUKEE -- Marquette University defeated the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 1-0 in the Golden Eagles' first match of the men's soccer preseason Saturday evening at Valley Fields. Sophomore forward Andy Huftalin netted the game-winning goal in the 49th minute.
Huftalin collected a blocked shot from freshman teammate TeeJay East in front of the goal mouth and deposited the rebound into the right side of the net for the decisive goal.
"It was just instinct," said Huftalin. "When the ball was being knocked around in the box, I saw the defense step up, so I had to move to get back onside. My job as a scavenger was to clean up the play. I just wanted to make sure that I kept the shot low and on target."
Marquette out-shot the Warhawks 15-3 in the contest, including a combined 11 shots from juniors Amilcar Herrera and Calum Mallace. MU dominated possession from the opening kickoff, but the Golden Eagles were not able to generate any quality chances in the first half of play as neither team could get a shot on goal in the opening period.
MU picked up the intensity on the offensive end in the second half, however, placing four shots on target. Starting goalkeeper Keenan Flynn played 45 minutes, splitting time with sophomore David Check, for the combined clean sheet.
"This is what I expected from our first outing," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "I think that with a little more precision and care, we could probably have had two more goals in the first half, and maybe two more in the second half. I think Whitewater worked hard, and we managed to stop them from having any clear opportunities."
Bennett's squad will take to the pitch again this Tuesday, Aug. 24, when the Golden Eagles continue their preseason slate against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
"We have to be tighter in certain areas of the field defensively," added Bennett, looking ahead to Tuesday's match against the Rangers. "We need to be able to break and create and finish quality chances up front."
Kickoff versus UW-Parkside is set for 7:05 p.m. CT at Valley Fields. MU will then conclude the exhibition season on the road Friday, Aug. 27, at Kentucky.
