MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's cross country teams will head to Madison, Wis., on Friday to open the 2010 season at the Badger Classic. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course with the women's 4K race, followed by the men's 8K at 5:30 p.m.
"This weekend's meet should be a pretty low key event, but I think the races will be competitive, especially up front," said head coach Mike Nelson. "It will be an opportunity for us to shake off the rust, as is any beginning of the season meet. I am ready to see us go out there and compete."
The men's cross country team returns all of its top finishers from 2009, including senior Brice Cleland, MU's top finisher in the BIG EAST Championships and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Cleland will lead the Golden Eagles along with Nick Szczech, Blake Johnson and fellow captain Peter Bolgert.
The men begin 2010 ranked 12th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Great Lakes Region Poll.
The women will be led by seniors Olivia Johnson, Kristin Pelzel and Laurie Dalrymple and will rely on a group of unproven runners to keep them in the top half of the BIG EAST.
In addition to Marquette, the meet will include Northwestern, Edgewood and meet host Wisconsin.
