Men's Golf Prepares for BIG EAST Championship

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's golf team will travel to Palm Harbor, Fla., to compete in the 2011 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship, April 16-19, 2011.

The BIG EAST Championship will be held at the Copperhead Cousre at Innisbrook Golf Club, the site of the PGA Tour's Transitions Championship. Live scoring will be available at

Following an afternoon of practice on Saturday, April 16, BIG EAST Championship play begins on Sunday, April 17. Marquette is paired with Connecticut and USF in the last grouping, teeing off from 9:30 a.m. to 10:10 a.m.

Tee times on Monday and Tuesday will be determined by standings, and begin at 7 a.m. each day.

Seniors Kelly Kretz and Ben Sieg, junior Matt Haase, and freshmen Michael Motz and Corey Konieczki will compete for the Golden Eagles. Kretz boasts the second scoring average (73.30) of all golfers competing at the BIG EAST Championship. Together, Kretz and Sieg are on track to conclude their respective MU careers amongst the all-time top golfers at Marquette.

Led by first year head coach Steve Bailey, Marquette joins 11 other schools looking to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, including Cincinnati, Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John's, USF, and Villanova.

The Golden Eagles have the fifth best ranking according to Golfstat, behind Notre Dame, St. John's, Louisville, and Villanova.

Last season, Marquette finished tied for ninth place at the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship at the same course. The Golden Eagles made history in 2008 by winning Marquette's first BIG EAST Championship.
