ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Freshman Kelmend Islami netted the golden goal in the 110th minute Sunday as the Marquette University men's soccer team rallied from a goal down to defeat Michigan 2-1 at U-M Soccer Complex.

It was Islami's first collegiate goal and came on an assist from Marquette goalkeeper David Check who drop-kicked the ball downfield following his ninth save of the match. Islami beat his defender to the ball and calmly chipped it over the Michigan goalkeeper to complete MU's comeback with 51 seconds remaining in double overtime.

"We had a counter attack, and I was one-on-one," said Islami. "I knew Check was going to play it. I was one-on-one with the keeper. I saw him slip, so I just hit it. I got a lot of confidence from this. I'm used to scoring, but I've been waiting for this one for a while."

Trailing 1-0 for most of the contest, MU equalized in the 73rd minute when fellow freshman C. Nortey -- in his first start at striker -- was able to capitalize following a 40-yard direct free kick from senior midfielder Calum Mallace that was spilled by the Wolverines' goalkeeper. Nortey gathered the loose ball in front of the net and finished to even the match at 1-1.

Michigan (2-6-1), which is coming off a NCAA College Cup final four appearance in 2010, scored the opening goal in the 11th minute when Adam Shaw recovered a rebound on a blocked shot by teammate Malcolm Miller. The ball settled at Shaw's feet near the penalty spot, and Shaw blasted a shot inside the left corner of the net to give U-M the lead.

"We started picking away at a one-goal deficit, then we were able to put one in; it was a really gritty performance, which is what I wanted to bring out in this Marquette team," said Golden Eagles head coach Louis Bennett. "In the end, I thought Michigan had the first half. It's hard to out-work a Michigan team and in the second half I think we out-worked them. We organized well. We bent but didn't' break, and David Check played very well today."

MU (2-4-1) had four corner kicks in the first half, including back-to-back chances in the 21st minute, resulting in consecutive headers by central defender Eric Pothast, who had a team best five shots on the day. Pothast's first header was saved by the goalkeeper over the crossbar while the second shot was blocked by a Wolverines defender.

In the 41st minute, U-M nearly went up two goals up on a free kick from 23 yards out that hit the near post. The ball bounced back into play before being cleared by MU.

Marquette picked up momentum after intermission adding 10 shots in the second half. Pothast, who returned to the MU lineup Sunday after missing Friday's match with a concussion, had three more shot attempts off headers early in the second period but could not level the score.

Senior midfielder Calum Mallace hit the right post after another MU corner kick in the 100th minute. On the other end of the pitch, Check had a number of diving stops in the match, including one in the 83rd minute on a 2-on-1 break for the Wolverines and back-to-back saves in the 106th minute.

Marquette returns to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 24 when the Golden Eagles open the 2011 BIG EAST Conference slate at Syracuse (6 p.m. Central time).
