SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Despite four Golden Eagles scoring in double figures, the Marquette University women's basketball team was defeated at Syracuse, 79-63, Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
Arlesia Morse led Marquette (13-13, 4-8 BIG EAST) with 20 points, while Sarina Simmons scored 14 points, Katie Young added 13 and Katherine Plouffe contributed 10 points. Morse was hot from long range sinking a season-high five 3-pointers.
Kayla Alexander led all scorers with 21 points and the Orange (15-11, 5-8 BIG EAST) shot 54.4 percent for the game.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Orange scored their first bucket at the 16:40 mark. The Orange used a 12-4 run midway through the first half to take 18-10 lead and went into halftime ahead, 36-29.
The Orange quickly pushed their seven-point halftime advantage to 11 points, 41-29, in the first two minutes of the second half. Morse scored MU's first basket of the second half at the 18:04 mark.
Marquette rallied behind a quick 7-0 run to cut the deficit to four points (43-39), but Syracuse responded with a 16-0 run to lead by 20 points, 59-39, with 9:10 remaining in the game.
Marquette didn't go away and chipped away at Syracuse's lead to come within 10 points, 67-57, with 3:59 left to play, but that was the closest the Golden Eagles came for the remainder of the game.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Cincinnati. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT at Fifth Third Arena.
