The Marquette University men's tennis team continues its 2011-12 dual match campaign this week with competition at the San Diego Hilton Mission Spring Valley Classic March 15-17.
The Golden Eagles will open play in the eight-team field against host No. 31 San Diego at 12 p.m. CT on Thursday afternoon. Also participating in the event are Harvard, UC-Irvine, Pacific, San Diego State, Purdue, Oklahoma State and USD.
Based on Thursday's result, Marquette will face either Purdue or Oklahoma State on Friday, March 16 before completing action on Saturday morning. The tournament is being co-hosted by San Diego (USD West Tennis Courts) and San Diego State (Aztec Tennis Center).
"This is our first event played outside since October so we will have to adjust to the conditions" head coach Steve Rodecap said. "The field for the event is outstanding and we will need some very good performances on Thursday against San Diego. They are coming off a great road win against Texas and will be a big challenge."
Half of the field is ranked in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. Harvard is No. 26, USD No. 31, San Diego State is No. 47 and Purdue is No. 54.
Marquette owns an overall record of 6-7, but has yet to pick up a road win this season. Sophomore Dan Mamalat tops the roster with 17 victories and owns a 7-2 record at the No. 2 position. Freshman Cameron Tehrani has won 8-of-10 matches and is second on the team with an overall record of 15-6.
The doubles tandem of Mamalat and junior Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley has earned an overall record of 11-5, including a 9-3 mark in dual action at the No. 1 position.
