The Marquette University men's tennis team has added freshmen Gleb Sklyr and Javier Varela Hernani to the squad's 2012-13 roster, head coach Steve Rodecap announced Tuesday morning.
"We couldn't be happier with our incoming recruiting class," Rodecap said. Both Gleb and Javier will be great additions to our returning group of players. Each player has achieved at a high level of tennis and I expect them both to step in and make an immediate impact to our program.
"They are also great students and are very serious about their academics and will be a great fit for Marquette," Rodecap added. "We look forward to their arrival this fall."
Sklyr, one of the top-ranked players in Israel, has climbed as high as 427th in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) rankings. He was the country's top-rated player in the 16-and-under division and attended Rothberg High School in Ramat-Hasharon, Israel, and has been serving in the army for the last three years.
Varela Hernani attended Gonzalo Torrenta Ballester in Spain and was named the Galicia region's second-best junior player while competing in the prep ranks. In 2011, he reached 98th in the country's men's rankings and claimed runner-up accolades in doubles in the 2010 Sanxenxo International Tournament's under-16 division.
The Golden Eagles return six letterwinners from the 2011-12 squad, a group that includes three players who were consistent members of the dual-match lineup. The group of returnees is led by junior Dan Mamalat, who claimed all-conference honors after collecting a team-best 21 singles victories.
