Jake Thomas Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MILWAUKEE - This week's Student-Athlete of the Week is men's basketball player Jake Thomas, who earned most valuable player honors Sunday afternoon at the championship tournament of the 2012 Scion Dental Milwaukee Pro-Am.

Thomas, playing for Robert W. Baird, scored 35 points and added 10 assists and seven rebounds in the league championship game. Thomas teamed with Derrick Wilson on the Baird squad, which entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed before dispatching of Schell Dentistry, AthletiCo and

The Racine, Wis., native, who is expected to see the first action of his MU career this season, averaged 24.3 points, 6.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds in tournament play.

Thomas was the co-winner of Marquette's Standard of Academic Excellence Award in 2011-12, while sitting out the campaign as a redshirt transfer from South Dakota.

The Golden Eagles begin the 2012-13 season on Friday, Nov. 9 in the Carrier Classic in Charleston, S.C., against Ohio State.

Women's VolleyballCarlson, who is a returning AVCA All-American, was named the 2011-12 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner for women's volleyball. Carlson carries a theology and psychology double major and ranked 17th in the NCAA in hitting percentage in 2011.
