MILWAUKEE - C. Nortey's 80th-minute goal Saturday sealed a 2-1 victory for the Marquette University men's soccer team over visiting Seton Hall on Senior Night at Valley Fields.
Redshirt sophomore Axel Sjoberg flicked a header to the top of the six-yard box and Nortey finished with a beautiful half-bicycle kick to break a 1-1 tie.
It was moment of redemption for Nortey, whose team-leading eight goal of the season and seventh career game-winner gave the Golden Eagles sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST Conference; The redshirt sophomore from Accra, Ghana had a goal disallowed six minutes earlier because of an offside call.
Marquette took an early lead in the 8th minute on an equally impressive strike by senior left back Paul Dillon. Teammate Adam Lysak sent a cross from near the right corner flag that bounced to the top of the box. An un-marked Dillon then struck a venomous left-footed volley that curled into the top right corner of the net to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
It was the Chesapeake, Va. native's first goal since his freshman campaign in 2010, as MU carried the lead into the locker room at halftime.
Seton Hall (7-8-2, 3-5-0 BIG EAST) leveled the match less than two minutes into the second half when Max Garcia capitalized off a Marquette turnover in the home side's defensive half of the field. Garcia's unassisted tally was the Pirates' lone shot of the second half.
MU went on to out-shoot Seton Hall 8-1 in the final stanza, including a header by Sjoberg that was saved by Pirates goalkeeper Julian Spindler after a chip to the far post by Golden Eagles midfielder Bryan Ciesiulka.
Coco Navarro intercepted the ball at the top of the box moments later and sent a through ball to Nortey, who slotted it inside the right post, but not before the assistant referee's flag went up.
With one game remaining in the regular season, Seton Hall, which is still fighting for the sixth and last spot in the upcoming BIG EAST tournament, picked up three yellow cards Saturday night. George Velasquez, Mateusz Brela and Victor Manosalvas were all booked within the first 58 minutes of action. Eight current and former student-athletes were honored prior to the match as part of Marquette's annual Senior Night festivities. Bryan Ciesiulka, Eric Pothast, Charlie Hoover, Andrew Krynski, Adam Lysak, Matt Leonard, Dennis Holowaty and Paul Dillon were all recognized.
Krynski earned his first start since the 2009 season, starting at striker in place of Nortey.
Marquette sits atop the league table with 19 points, one point ahead of the Xavier Mountaineers (6-2-0 BIG EAST), who defeated Villanova on the road 1-0 Saturday. Meanwhile, the Georgetown Hoyas (5-2-1) drop to third place following a 1-0 loss at St. John's.
The Golden Eagles will travel to DePaul this Friday, Nov. 8 (Noon CT) for the final match of regular-season. A win over the Blue Demons would clinch the BIG EAST regular-season title and earn MU the top seed in the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship, including a bye into the semifinal round at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.
