TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 8 seed Marquette women's tennis team fell, 4-3, to No. 4 seed Syracuse on Sunday afternoon at the BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship. The Golden Eagles were playing in the fifth place match.
MU got off to a strong start earning the doubles point as sophomore Ana Pimienta and freshman Erin Gebes defeated the Orange at No. 2 doubles, 8-2 and junior Rocio Diaz with freshman Aleeza Kanner joined at No. 3 doubles and won their set in an 8-1 decision.
Syracuse evened the score to open singles as freshman Laia Hernandez Soler fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Ali Dawson came right back to give Marquette a 2-1 advantage as she won No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
The Orange responded with a victory in the no. 1 spot as Pimienta fell, 6-2, 7-6 (4), but Gebes was victorious at the No. 3 position,6-4, 7-5, which gave the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead. After the Orange tied the match at 3-3, the deciding set came down to the No. 3 court where freshman Aina Hernandez Soler fought hard after falling in the opening set, but could not overcome SU in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision.
