MILWAUKEE -- Marquette University central defender Axel Sjoberg is getting national recognition for his role in a pair of Golden Eagles men's soccer victories over the weekend.
Sjoberg, who was named Most Valuable Player of the 39th Panther Invitational, earned a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, as well as TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week and the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Weekly Honor Roll.
The 6-foot-7 redshirt sophomore from Stockholm, Sweden played all 180 minutes and wore the captain's armband in both of MU's victories, helping the team claim the Panther Invitational title.
He scored his first goal of the season on a header in the 63rd minute of MU's 4-1 home win over Drake on Sunday. Sjoberg was also an integral piece of the Golden Eagles' backline that posted their first shutout of the season Friday with a 3-0 victory over Bowling Green.
Marquette out-scored its opponents 7-1 on the weekend en route to the tournament title. Sjoberg was one of four MU players named to the Panther Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Sjoberg, a preseason All-American and Preseason BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year, now has 10 goals in 28 career matches from his center back position.
