The Marquette University men's tennis team (1-1) opened the dual portion of its 2013-14 campaign this weekend with a pair of matches in Nashville, Tenn., against Lipscomb and Vanderbilt.
The Golden Eagles defeated Lipscomb 5-2 on Saturday evening before falling to the No. 16 Commodores 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Lipscomb's lineup featured just four healthy players, so the Golden Eagles were able to claim default wins at No. 3 doubles and the bottom two singles positions. Senior Dan Mamalat picked up a straight-set win at the No. 1 spot and freshman Kristiyan Trukov did the same at the No. 4 slot. Marquette also claimed both doubles matchups.
"It was a difficult situation and we tried to adjust the lineup to get some of the younger guys some experience," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "It was a little closer than I would have liked, but I was happy with the effort by the guys."
After Vanderbilt swept a pair of doubles matches to claim the point and a 1-0 advantage, the Commodores claimed each of the singles matchups on the day as well. Junior Vukasin Teofanovic put up a fight against No. 9 Alex Gonzales at the No. 1 position, falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Mamalat was also edged at No. 2, dropping the match 10-7 in the set tiebreaker after the match had been decided.
Teofanovic and Mamalat also teamed up at No. 1 doubles and gave the second-ranked tandem of Gonzales and Ryan Lipman a battler before falling 6-4.
