MILWAUKEE -- Marquette University junior Pat Sanchez has been named the BIG EAST Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for September, the league announced Thursday afternoon.
Sanchez, a two-time All-BIG EAST Conference performer, has posted four straight top-11 finishes, going back to the 2014 BIG EAST Conference Men's Golf Championship last spring and including the first three collegiate tournaments this fall.
The Mazatlan, Mexico native is currently the top-ranked (No. 132) golfer in the league, according to the latest Golfweek rankings. His scoring average of 72.33 and average leads all MU golfers through the first month of the season.
Sanchez finished off a superb month of golf earlier this week at the Badger Invitational where he tied for 10th with a 3-over-par 219. His opening-round 68 tied his career low round and gave him the lead, two shots clear of the field. It was his third round in the 60's in as many tournaments.
In the first tournament of the season, The Northern Intercollegiate, Sanchez shot a three-round total of 222, which was highlighted by a second-round 69, which was the best round of the day by two shots and good enough for a T11 finish in an incredibly strong field that included No. 12 Virginia, No. 27 Ohio State and No. 38 Winthrop.
Next was the Windon Memorial Classic, which featured No. 16 California, No. 27 Ohio State and No. 31 Iowa, where Sanchez finished 11th by shooting an even-par 210 and posting yet another round in the 60's with a first-round 69.
Through three events, the Golden Eagles have climbed to No. 57 in the latest Golfweek rankings and are No. 64 in the first rankings released by Golfstat earlier this week.
Marquette will host the 11-team Erin Hills Intercollegiate, which begins this Sunday, Oct. 5 at Erin Hills Golf Course, future site of the 2017 U.S. Open.
