BIG EAST Release
NEW YORK - Marquette University sophomore outside hitter Autumn Bailey was named BIG EAST Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the third-straight week and the fifth time this season on Monday afternoon after leading the women's volleyball team to a sweep of DePaul on Saturday.
Bailey became the fastest Marquette player to 1,000 kills in program history as the Burlington, Ontario, native reached the plateau in the first set against DePaul with her 10th kill of the match. She needed just 11 swings to notch 10 kills and opened the match by hitting .909 (10-0-11) to that point. Bailey concluded the contest with 23 kills, 10 digs, three service aces and hit a combined .419.
The sophomore has two of the top five single-season kill totals in Marquette history and with 530 kills this season is just 14 kills shy of Kim Todd's MU-record 544 kills, which she set in 2006.
The BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, Bailey previously earned the offensive player of the week honor four times this season on Oct. 13, Oct. 20, Nov. 10 and Nov. 24. She ranks in the top 10 of NCAA Division I with 5.60 points and 4.82 kills per set on the year.
Sophomore libero Lauren Houg also collected a weekly accolade for the third straight week and was named to the league's honor roll after posting a match-high 19 digs in the sweep of DePaul. Freshman setter Gabby Benda earned her second weekly honor of the year by posting 37 assists as the Golden Eagles hit a combined .322 in the victory.
Marquette (24-7, 14-4 BIG EAST) has earned the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Conference Women's Volleyball Championship, which it will host on Nov. 28-29 at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles begin action in the semifinal round at 5:30 p.m. Central time on Friday, Nov. 28 against No. 2-seed Seton Hall. The match will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through the FOX Sports GO application.
