Lyon Named First Team Academic All-American

MILWAUKEE - Marquette University goalkeeper Charlie Lyon has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team®, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Tuesday.

Lyon becomes just the fourth student-athlete in Marquette athletics history earn First Team distinction at least twice in a career. Scott Ziemba (1995, 1996) is the only other men's soccer student-athlete to receive the recognition twice. A redshirt senior from St. Charles, Illinois, Lyon carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.887 and is set to graduate this December, majoring in biomedical sciences.

Marquette's co-captain set a program record in 2014 with eight straight shutouts from Sept. 5 through Oct. 11, including a stretch of 804:58 minutes without conceding a goal (also a school record). A three-time Academic All-District selection and three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team member, Lyon recorded 29 shutouts in his career, most in program history. Lyon is also Marquette's all-time career leader in goals against average (0.83) and save percentage (.811).

Lyon is also one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award, tabbed as "the nation's premier award for NCAA senior student-athletes." To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence -- community, classroom, character and competition. Winners of the Senior CLASS Award for each sport will be announced in December.
