ROSEMONT, Ill. - Despite sporting a 13-point lead midway through the second half, Marquette faltered down the stretch on Wednesday afternoon and allowed DePaul to pull out a 61-58 victory in the BIG EAST Conference season opener at Allstate Arena.

The Blue Demons used a 25-9 run over the final 12 minutes to upset Marquette, which led as many as 13 points, 49-36, on a Juan Anderson free throw with 11:46 remaining.

DePaul (7-7, 1-0 BIG EAST) sophomore guard Billy Garrett Jr., who scored a game-high 19 points, knotted the game at 55-55 with a 3-pointer and gave the Blue Demons their first lead on a free throw, 56-55, since early in the first half with just 1:14 to play.

A Luke Fischer layup put MU down 60-58 with 20 seconds remaining and after DePaul's Darrick Wood missed one of two from the charity stripe, two MU attempts from deep to tie fell short.

Duane Wilson and Matt Carlino led the Golden Eagles (8-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) with 11 points apiece.

The Golden Eagles took a six point lead into the half, 32-26, behind nine points from Duane Wilson. The redshirt freshman gave MU its largest lead of the opening frame at 29-20 with three minutes remaining in the stanza.

The Blue Demons responded to cut their deficit to four points early in the second half on a layup from Joe Hanel with 14:38 left in the frame. Out of a called timeout, Luke Fischer found Derrick Wilson for a 3-pointer and Jajuan Johnson converted an and-one to put MU up by double digits, 44-34.

DePaul's second-leading scorer and top rebounder Tommy Hamilton IV was suspended for the conference opener for a violation of team rules.

The Golden Eagles are now 0-4 in BIG EAST Conference regular season openers on the road.

Marquette returns to action at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 1 p.m. Central time against Providence.
