Drake Relays Friday Results (PDF)
DES MOINES, Iowa--The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads, returning to the Drake Relays for the first time since the spring of 2011, wrapped up competition Friday in Des Moines, Iowa. Along with the action at the Drake Relays, a group of student-athletes competed at the Grand View Viking Classic, also taking place in Des Moines, and another group of Golden Eagles participated at the Benedictine Twilight in Lisle, Ill., on Friday afternoon.
Friday's action at the Drake Relays was highlighted by an 11th place finish in the javelin from freshman John Krzyszkowski with a throw of 195 feet-9 inches. Krzyszkowski's toss was the second best mark he has reached so far in his young career at MU, and his best since he tossed a school record of 207-9 at the Marquette Duals in early April. Senior throws specialist Kristen Gaffey also was a standout Friday for the Golden Eagles, notching a mark of 44-7 in the shot put in Des Moines, her second furthest toss so far this season.
Meanwhile, at the Grand View Viking Classic, the Marquette Golden Eagles left their mark on the competition, claiming three separate event titles. Junior Will Koeck, continuing what has been a very successful 2014 campaign, notched a victory in the hammer throw with a mark of 193-5. Finishing just behind Koeck in the hammer was teammate Brett Hardin with a toss of 187-8. In the women's portion of the hammer throw, MU also was on top, with junior Samantha Kennedy winning the women's hammer throw with a 183-1 mark. Sophomore Nicole Ethier also garnered an individual event win with her victory in the 400-meter run at the Grand View Viking Classic.
The Blue and Gold also were well represented in Lisle, Ill., with individual student-athletes earning personal best marks across the board. Sophomore jumper Max Kilpin notched a personal-best bound of 2.00 meters in the high jump event, while teammate Joel Swanberg also recorded a personal-best effort of 1.75 meters. The women's 4x200-meter relay squad of Arra Strong and Anna Strong, Gretchen Homan and Carlye Schuh finished with the No. 4 mark in program history with a time of 1:40.32.
The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday at the Drake Relays.
