MILWAUKEE--The No. 15/16 Marquette University women's soccer team (1-1) fell to the Northwestern Wildcats 1-0 Sunday evening at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles suffered their first defeat in a regular season match at home since a 1-0 loss to New Mexico in 2010.

Northwestern (1-1) was on the attack late in the second half when Niki Sebo pushed it ahead to teammate Addie Steiner who chipped right past the outstretched hands of MU goalkeeper Amanda Engel to give the Wildcats the lead in the 82nd minute.

Marquette responded a few minutes later with a scoring opportunity of its own late in the match. With just a shade under two minutes left in regulation, Ann Marie Lynch provided an excellent cross from the left side of the pitch to teammate Mary Luba who was unable to cash in.

The Golden Eagle offense was held in check by Northwestern. MU did not record its first shot on goal until the 58th minute when Liz Bartels' attempt from the outskirts of the box was saved by Northwestern's goalkeeper Lauren Clem.

The Wildcats outshot MU 10 to seven, and also held the edge in terms of shots on goal by a margin of six to one.

Engel, the program leader in goals against average, collected five saves on the evening.

After the first 45 minutes of play neither MU nor Northwestern managed to find the back of the net. The Golden Eagles' defensive unit turned a strong half of play, with Engel fortifying the front with four saves.

The Wildcats remained on the offensive for the majority of the first stanza, recording three shots on goal to go with three cornerkicks. The blue and gold collected three shots but none of the attempts were on goal.

The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Aug. 29, when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on the Golden Gophers of the University of Minnesota at 7 p.m. Central time.
