MU Golfers Takes Fifth at Windon Memorial
Nelson, Sanchez once again pace Golden Eagles
SKOKIE, Illinois - The Marquette University men's golf team concluded their play at the Windon Memorial Classic with a fifth place finish Monday afternoon. Juniors Pat Sanchez and Nick Nelson finished 11th and T12, respectively, and once again led all MU golfers.
For the second consecutive tournament, Sanchez and Nelson finished as Marquette's top individuals and continue to show the ability and consistency required to lead the Golden Eagles in 2014-15.
Brandon Cloete, Henry Klongland and Zach Gaugert rounded out the top-five for the Golden Eagles, separated by only two shots. Freshman Garrett Loomis made his collegiate debut for the Golden Eagles, as an individual, by carding a three-round total of 234, highlighted by a third round 75.
Marquette was tied for second after the first round of play on Sunday morning and stayed within striking distance in round two, navigating a difficult Evanston Golf Club. However, round three belonged to the Golden Bears of California, who carded a team score of 10-under, which beat the next best third round team score of 285 by Tulsa (T8) by nine shots. California won the event finishing 13 strokes ahead of Ohio State.
Iowa (849), Michigan (849) and Marquette (856) rounded out the top-five of the very competitive field. Medalist honors went to Tulsa's Colton Staggs, finishing with a three-round total of 205 (-5) and tied Luke Donald's 2007 Evanston Golf Club course record with a 7-under 63 in the third round.
Marquette will continue the fall portion of its schedule by traveling to Madison, Wisconsin for the Badger Invitational, September 28-30.
