MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University women's tennis team is looking to remain undefeated this weekend when they hit the road to take on No. 52 Indiana (6-1) and No. 44 Illinois (3-1). On Saturday, MU will face the Hoosiers at 10 a.m. Central time. Sunday, they face the Fighting Illini starting at 11 a.m.
The Golden Eagles have opened the season 6-0 for the first time since 1990-91, when the ladies started 9-0. Marquette started 8-0 two seasons prior in 1988-89. This is their third best start under head coach Jody Bronson's 30 seasons at MU.
This past weekend MU had victories over Bowling Green and Wisconsin. On Friday evening, Marquette swept Bowling Green, 7-0. Sophomore Diana Tokar, senior Vanessa Foltinger and freshman Paula Tormos Sanchez prevailed early. All three ladies did not drop a set and won, 6-0, 6-0 in their singles matches.
On Sunday Marquette outlasted the Badgers in a 4-3 victory. Tormos Sanchez' singles win on the No. 6 court (3-6, 7-5, 7-5) was the deciding factor in the match against Wisconsin.
This past Saturday, IU fell to No. 47 DePaul 5-2, before rebounding to sweep Butler, 7-0. Katie Klyczek is the No. 1 singles players for the Hoosiers and is 6-1 on the season.
Illinois played host to San Jose State last Saturday and edged out a victory, 4-3. Freshman Jade Hilton's come from behind win (3-6, 7-5, 7-6) (8-5) lifted the Ilini.
The Golden Eagles return home on Saturday, Feb. 21 for a doubleheader against Western Michigan at 10 a.m. and IUPUI at 5 p.m. at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
