The Marquette University men's basketball team opens official practice on Monday morning in preparation for the program's foreign tour Aug. 10-20 to Italy and Switzerland.
The official travel party will depart from Chicago on August 10 and will make stops throughout Italy in Rome, Florence, Pisa, Treviso, Venice, Vicenza and Lake Como. The team will also play one game in Lugano, Switzerland and visit Vatican City.
"Our trip to Italy this August is a win-win for our program," head coach Steve Wojciechowski said. "From a basketball standpoint, it will allow us to get a jump start on the season with the 10 practices and four games. We are also providing our guys with an experience they are going to remember for the rest of their lives. A number of our players have never been out of the country and having the ability to experience another culture is extremely important."
The tour, which is allowed as frequently as every four years by NCAA rules, is organized by Basketball Travelers, Inc. and the itinerary includes numerous cultural learning experiences, as well as four games against professional teams in the region. Each of the four games will be available online for fans to view live on YouTube and complete information will be available on GoMarquette.com in the coming weeks. The broadcasts will feature full production elements, play-by-play and color analysis, graphics and special guests throughout the games.
Fans interested in keeping up with the program's activities throughout the trip are encouraged to utilize the squad's official social media platforms on Twitter (@MarquetteMBB), Instagram (marquette.basketball) and Facebook (/MarquetteMensBB). MU will also being launching a basketball-specific app prior to the trip, which will serve as a social media hub for the latest information on the squad not only in Italy, but all season long.
3 Penny Films, which produced last season's all-access features (Inside Marquette Basketball), will also be with the program from the opening practice through its return to Milwaukee. MU fans will be provided with an exclusive look at the squad's preparations prior to departure on August 10 and a 30-minute program, which will debut later this fall, will document the entire experience.
The foreign tour will be the first for the program since the Golden Eagles visited Vancouver over Labor Day weekend prior to the 2007-08 campaign.
