GOLDEN EAGLES SHINE AT WISCONSIN STATE AMATEUR
Rising Marquette senior Pat Sanchez posted back-to-back rounds of even par 72 to finish in a tie for second place at the 114th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship at Erin Hills Golf Course.
Sanchez was joined in the field by four other Marquette players who made the cut - Sanchez's final round partner and MU classmate, Zach Gaugert, finished in a tie for fifth place after entering the final round in the top spot.
On the final hole, Sanchez had an opportunity to match Wisconsin sophomore Eddie Wadja at 5-over-par to force a playoff. On the par-5, 660-yard 18th hole, Sanchez hit his approach shot to 10 feet left of the hole, needing a birdie putt to tie for the lead - his birdie attempt slid right of the hole and he finished in five.
Nick Nelson, who has a pair of amateur wins this summer at local U.S. Open qualifying and the WSGA Match Play Championship, climbed the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 12th. Nelson was joined there by former teammate Brandon Cloete at 12-over-par - Cloete was one of four players under par (2-under) in the final round. Freshman Charlie Maleki entered the final day tied in second place with Sanchez at 6-over-par, but finished in a tie for 20th place. Junior Henry Klongland rounded out the Marquette contingent, finishing tied for 25th.
