BIG EAST Release
NEW YORK - Marquette University freshman goalkeeper Maddy Henry was selected as the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season on Monday afternoon, while redshirt senior Darian Powell was also recognized on the league's weekly honor roll.
The Golden Eagles (10-6-2, 6-2-0 BIG EAST) went 2-0 over the last week with a 2-0 victory at Villanova on Thursday and a 2-1 overtime triumph against Butler on Sunday afternoon. The win over the Bulldogs was the 300th win of head coach Markus Roeders' career and secured a spot in the conference tournament. The victory also put Marquette alone in second place in the BIG EAST standings with 18 points.
Henry, who also earned the same honor on Oct. 10 and was on the weekly honor roll on Oct. 3, recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season at Villanova by tying a career best with eight saves. She made a pair of saves in Sunday's win over Butler.
Powell, who has played in the midfield in recent matches, earns her first weekly accolade of the year after posting the match's first goal on Sunday and assisting on Carrie Madden's match winner in overtime.
The Golden Eagles will face current league leader DePaul on Friday evening at Valley Fields as the two squads square off for the BIG EAST regular season crown and the league's No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Marquette will honor Roeders' 300th career victory and its 10-player senior class prior to the match against the Blue Demons.
