MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's volleyball team will open its 2016 home slate at the annual Marquette Invitational Sept. 16-17 at the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles will welcome Iowa State, Milwaukee and Missouri State.
MU will take on Iowa State on Friday, Sept. 16 with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Central time. Marquette will continue tournament play on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they play Milwaukee at 1:00 p.m. CT and conclude the tournament at 7:00 pm CT against Missouri State.
Iowa State has opened the season with a 6-3 record, but includes losses against No. 1 Nebraska and No. 18 Creighton. The Cyclones are led offensively by Jess Schaben who has registered 100 kills, followed by Ciara Capezio who has tallied 60 kills.
Milwaukee also sits with a 6-3 record to begin the season which included a loss against fellow-BIG EAST foe Xavier. The Panthers are led by Caitlin Schultz who has amassed 78 kills and hit at a .228 clip during 2016.
Missouri State is 8-3 this season and has won six consecutive contests, which includes a 3-2 defeat of No. 12 Ohio State. The Bears have also defeated No. 14 Illinois, 3-2. Two of Missouri State's results include losses against No. 8 UCLA and No. 15 Hawai'i.
The Golden Eagles have started their 2016 campaign with three-consecutive road tournaments, a stretch in which they finished 7-2, including the program's second-ever win against a top-10 team, defeating No. 7 USC, 3-1 in the first game of the season.
Marquette competed last weekend at the Bluegrass Battle in Kentucky, winning all three of its matches and dropping just one set in the whole tournament.
Redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis had a stellar weekend in Kentucky, earning her BIG EAST Player of the Week honors. Louis leads the team with 131 kills (3.97/set) and is hitting at a .255 clip this year. She also is second on the team with 79 digs.
Senior libero Lauren Houg leads the team with 170 digs (5.15/set) while Sara Blasier has notched 307 assists.
Marquette's contests against Iowa State and Missouri State will be streamed live on GoMarquette.com with MUTV producing the telecast. The Golden Eagles battle with crosstown-foe Milwaukee will be shown locally on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (Channel 32/1332 HD in eastern Wisconsin), as part of MU's partnership with Time Warner Cable.
Following the tournament, the Golden Eagles will open BIG EAST Conference play when they take on Creighton at 7:00 p.m. CT in Omaha, Nebraska.
