MILWAUKEE--The Marquette University women's volleyball team will begin its 12th season of BIG EAST Conference play traveling to Creighton on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. Central time, followed by Providence on Sunday, Sept. 25 at Noon CT. The Golden Eagles are 111-54 all-time in conference action.
The match at Creighton will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network via the Fox Sports GO app with Brad Burwell and Erin Swanson Russell will call the action from the sidelines. Sunday's match at Providence will have streaming available for a paid subscription. Live stats are available for both matches as well as updates on Marquette Volleyball's Twitter account (@MarquetteVB).
Creighton has opened the season .500 (6-6), with five of those six losses coming at the hand on top-25 opponents, including a loss against No. 1 Nebraska on Sept. 17. The Bluejays are led offensively by Jaali Winters who has registered 134 kills (3.05/set), followed by Taryn Kloth with 116 kills.
Providence sits at 11-4 to begin the season, boasting a nine-game win streak snapped by Quinnipiac on Sept. 10. Megan Onyundo leads in kills (145, 2.96/set) for the Friars, who most recently beat both Fordham and Hartford 3-1.
Marquette (10-2) opened 2016 campaign with three-consecutive road tournaments, a stretch in which they finished 7-2, including the programs second-ever win against a top-10 team, defeating No. 7 USC, 3-1 in the first game of the season.
The Golden Eagles hosted the Marquette Invitational last weekend to kick off the home season, winning all three of their matches and dropping just one set in the entirety of the tournament to extend the team's winning streak to six.
Redshirt sophomore Taylor Louis had a stellar weekend yet again, earning her second consecutive recognition as BIG EAST Player of the Week. She averaged 5.70 kills over three matches at the Marquette Invitational and was awarded the tournament's MVP. Louis leads MU with 188 kills (4.37/set) and is hitting at a .261 clip this year.
Senior libero Lauren Houg leads the team with 228 digs (5.30/set), which also tops the league, while Sara Blasier has notched 400 assists (9.52/set).
Following Sunday's trip to Providence, the Golden Eagles will continue BIG EAST action hosting Georgetown Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. CT at the Al McGuire Center.
