SOUTH ORANGE, New Jersey - Carrie Madden tallied her team-best seventh goal of the year as the Marquette University women's soccer team defeated Seton Hall, 2-0, on Thursday evening at Carroll Field to secure home field advantage in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals.
The Golden Eagles (12-6-1, 5-4 BIG EAST) will host Xavier on Sunday at Valley Fields in the league quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Madden scored the mid-first half goal and MU added another midway through the second half on an own goal off a Leah Celarek corner kick. Sophomore keeper Maddy Henry also made five shots in net for her ninth clean sheet of the year.
Madden's goal in the 22nd minute came after a couple of great individual efforts from her teammates. Darian Powell was able to maintain possession after going down in the midfield to win the ball back to Eli Beard, who stepped upfield and served a ball across the pitch to Kylie Sprecher at the far post. Sprecher then waited for a defender to collapse on her to free up Madden in front of the net.
The goal was Madden's seventh of the season and third in the last two matches.
She nearly potted another in the 63rd minute on a corner kick played into the box by Celarek. Madden leapt at the ball at the goalmouth, but narrowly missed, though the Golden Eagles scored as the ball hit off an SHU player and into the back of the net.
The Pirates conclude the 2017 campaign winless at 0-12-5 (0-6-3 BIG EAST).
Marquette owns a 6-1-1 record all-time against the Pirates, including a 2-1 victory in last year's meeting at Valley Fields. MU's lone loss came in its last trip to Carroll Field, a rain-soaked 1-0 defeat on an own goal in 2015.
The Golden Eagles, who have qualified for the BIG EAST quarterfinals all 13 years as a league member, will begin their quest for a third league tournament crown on Sunday against Xavier.
