MILWAUKEE - Marquette picked up its first BIG EAST Conference win with a 74-65 victory over Georgetown on Saturday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Redshirt senior guard Andrew Rowsey led all players with a season-high 35 points as the Golden Eagles (10-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) evened the all-time series with the Hoyas, 12-12. Rowsey scored 26 points in the second half and his 35 are the highest single-game total for an MU player since Matt Carlino's 38 against Georgia Tech on Nov. 27, 2014 in the Orlando Classic.
Rowsey created some separation for Marquette in the early stages of the second half with three consecutive 3-pointers as MU built a 49-36 edge with 13:24 remaining.
The Hoyas would pull things closer down the stretch but could not overcome their 25 turnovers.
Both squads struggled offensively in the first half, with MU limiting the Hoyas to just 35 percent shooting (7-of-20) with 14 turnovers. Marquette led by as many as 11 points in the first and went up 10 on a Markus Howard 3-pointer right before the half that was quickly followed by three free throws from Georgetown's Jessie Govan.
Freshman Jamal Cain, who had a career-high 16 points in MU's league lid-lifter against Xavier, contributed eight first half points
The Golden Eagles resume BIG EAST Conference action next week on the road with upcoming games at Providence on Jan. 3 and at Villanova on Jan. 6.
