MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's lacrosse team dropped its third-straight game to a top-20 opponent to open the season as No. 17 Johns Hopkins held on for the 12-10 win inside the Valley Fields Dome on Saturday.
After Marquette's Allison Lane tied the game at 9-9 with 12:27 left in regulation, the Blue Jays (2-0) mounted a 3-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Golden Eagles (0-3) scored once more with 2:02 remaining, but were unable to win the ensuing draw as JHU ran out the remainder of the clock for the road win.
Marquette never led, but did manage to tie the score on three separate occasions, including twice in the second half. After two quick goals by the Blue Jays to open the scoring, Riley Hill scored her lone goal of the contest with 16:45 left in the first half to knot the game at 3-apiece.
JHU took a 7-6 lead into the locker room, but the Golden Eagles gained momentum with back-to-back goals from Julianna Shearer to close out the half. Grace Gabriel then tied the game at 7-7 with the first score of the second stanza.
Shearer and Gabriel each finished with three goals on the afternoon. Shearer chipped in two ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Gabriel added two ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Cate Soccodato added two goals and an assist as well.
The Golden Eagles have won the draw control in each of their first three games, doing so against JHU on Saturday by a margin of 14-10. Unfortunately, turnovers plagued Marquette in the long run as it committed a season-high 26 in the loss. JHU outshot MU, 30-24, while also holding the edge in ground balls, 31-25.
Marquette will now embark on a season-long seven-game road trip that will span 41 days between home games with the next game at Valley Fields being the BIG EAST home opener against Villanova on April 1.
MU will be back in action Thursday, Feb. 23, visiting Central Michigan for a 1 p.m. Central time start.
