MILWAUKEE Â-- Tanner Thomson tallied a career-high six goals, en route to the Marquette University men's lacrosse team tying a program record for goals in a 17-9 victory over St. John's on Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Seniors Joe Dunn, Ryan McNamara and Robbie Pisano as well as redshirt sophomore Jack Zerrillo each scored twice for the Golden Eagles (6-3, 2-1 BIG EAST), who also notched 17 goals in the season opener at Jacksonville.
Junior Zachary Melillo won 19-of-25 at the face-off dot after going 7-of-14 to start the contest. Marquette then went on to win thirteen straight face-offs fueled by Melillo's flawless second half.
Joe Madsen scored four goals for the Red Storm (1-10, 0-2 BIG EAST) and five other St. John's players notched a marker in the afternoon matchup.
Thomson ties Jordan Greenfield for second all-time in MU history with six goals in a single game. The Marquette program record of seven goals was set by Andy DeMichiei in last year's meeting with St. John's in Queens, New York.
The Golden Eagles not only dominated on the offensive end, but also held the Red Storm to only three goals over the last 30 minutes. St. John's was only able to get off 22 shots throughout the game to MU's 47, while Marquette also scooped up 31 ground balls to the Red Storm's 13.
The Golden Eagles will next play a pair of road games at No. 3/4 Notre Dame on Tuesday, April 11 and Providence on Saturday, April 15.
