CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Marquette University men's soccer team battled for 90 minutes against one of the top teams in the country, but two second-half goals led host and No. 12 Virginia to a 2-0 non-conference victory at KlÃÆ'Æ'¶ckner Stadium on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles (0-4-1) played an even first 45 minutes with the nationally-ranked Cavaliers (4-0-1), but the hosts broke the scoreless tie in the 48th minute when Raheem Taylor-Parkes won back possession inside the box and deposited the first goal inside the right post.
UVa added one more in the 86th on a penalty awarded to Sergi Nus, who buried it inside the right post. It was the second penalty awarded to an MU opponent in as many contests.
"There are positives from this," head coach Louis Bennett said. "The team is beginning to expect more from themselves. There were moments in the game that we created and had chances, but we weren't able to put them away. I thought that Luis Barraza was very good and he made two fantastic saves to keep us in the game."
Barraza had an impressive night in goal. Aside from the two goals in which there was very little he could do about, the Santa Teresa, N.M., native made six saves, including back-to-back stops in the 58th minute where he made the initial save then recovered quickly enough to secure the rebound attempt.
Barraza leads all BIG EAST goalkeepers with 28 saves on the season and is averaging nearly 6.0 per game.
Grant Owens and Daniel Szczepanek combined for four of the team's seven shots on the night. Steffen BÃÆ'Æ'¶hm and Owens recorded the lone shots on target, both coming in the first half.
MU was outshot 15-7 in the match with UVa earning an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Cavaliers held a 3-1 edge in corners, but was without a single one in the second half.
"I think right now it's about finding our niche in front of goal," Bennett said. "We need help by scoring goals and creating even more chances. We were credited with seven shots (tonight) and I think there were several that were off target that should've been on target. And doing that in the BIG EAST, and if we put the ball in the back of the net, we'll win some games."
Marquette returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, when it travels to Philadelphia to take on Villanova in the BIG EAST Conference opener. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. Central time.
"We've played teams that are going to be quality dominant teams in their own conferences and possibly all of those teams might be in the NCAA," Bennett said of the squad's challenging non-conference schedule to date. "So we've really had a good dose already of what playing in the BIG EAST is like."

48' | UVa | Raheem Taylor-Parkes (Unassisted): A miscommunication by MU's center back duo allowed Taylor-Parkes to regain possession and from there it was an easy shot inside the right post from 10 yds out.
86' | UVa | Sergi Nus (Penalty): UVa regained possession in MU's defensive third and played the ball in the box. Skinner marked his man, but contact was made and the referee deemed it enough to award a penalty, which Nus buried inside the right post.
