MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University men's soccer team notched its first victory of the campaign in the BIG EAST home opener against Seton Hall, 4-2, on Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles (1-5-1, 1-1-0 BIG EAST), who set their season-high in goals late in the first half, moved out to a 3-0 advantage late in the opening stanza. Leading scorer Grant Owens opened the first-half barrage with a header in the 14th minute. Sophomore Connor Alba's perfectly placed cross found Owens on the left side of the box and he calmly beat SHU keeper Elliot Munford.

Six minutes later senior Daniel Szczepanek volleyed home a rebound after Munford had saved an original shot by senior Brody Kraussel. The goal was the fifth of Szczepanek's career. Junior Diego NÃÆ'Æ'ºÃÆ'Æ'±ez found the back of the net at the 29:59 mark for his first score of the campaign and Marquette suddenly found itself ahead 3-0.

Seton Hall (3-6-1, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) responded with a header to open the second half. In the 80th minute of play, Tode Atlija sent a long clearance to Szczepanek, who fired a breakaway goal up the right side for his second goal of the game.

Marquette owned the edge in saves (5-3), giving goalkeeper Luis Barraza his first win of the season. MU, which matched its season goal total (four in six matches) Saturday night, is now 7-0-2 in BIG EAST home openers since 2009.

MU and SHU recorded six corner kicks apiece, while the Pirates tallied 18 shots to the Golden Eagles' 16, including Szczepanek's and Nunez's marked four shots apiece.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at cross-city foe Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Cup kicks off at 7:05 p.m. at Englemann Stadium.
