MILWAUKEE - Marquette's lone shot of the night proved to be the difference as Kylie Sprecher's 24th-minute goal lifted the women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Boston University on Friday night despite a 25-1 shot disparity.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Henry earned her third clean sheet of the year with seven saves and the Marquette defense held its opponent off the board for a fifth straight match.
The Golden Eagles (6-1) have won each of their last six matches and have not surrendered a goal since a 2-1 win over Kentucky on Aug. 20.
Sprecher's second career goal came as the Terriers (1-4-2) controlled play for much of the opening half. Darian Powell found Sprecher just inside the goal area with a perfect cross from the left flank, which Sprecher buried from five yards.
BU held a 13-1 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes with MU's only shot coming on Sprecher's strike.
The Terriers also had numerous looks early in the second half, including great looks from Anna Heilferty and Erin Neville. Heilferty had a shot blocked by Madison Dunker from the left flank in the 52nd minute, while Neville rang a shot off the crossbar in the 64th.
The Marquette defense held strong over the final few minutes and a last ditch effort with BU's keeper in the attacking third came up empty.
Junior forward Jamie Kutey, who has not seen the pitch in MU's last three matches, started for the first time since suffering an injury in MU's 3-0 win over Drake on Aug. 25.
Marquette continues its road swing on the East Coast at Rhode Island on Sunday at noon Central time. The contest will be broadcast live on the A-10 Network.
