The Marquette University men's tennis team (3-1) claimed its third-straight victory on Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium, downing UIC 7-0 in non-conference action.

The Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the doubles point in exciting fashion. After falling at No. 1, junior Greg Anderson and freshman Luis Heredia Gomez rallied for a 7-6 victory at the No. 2 spot. The point came down to the efforts of sophomore Luke Smrek and senior doubles specialist Scott Christian. Christian secured the point for Marquette with a big serve in the tiebreaker and MU continued the momentum into singles play.

Three quick straight-set victories by Brandon Shanklin, Alvaro Verdu and Brett Meyers in singles clinched the team victory.

The Golden Eagles return to action against Green Bay at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, Feb. 9 to continue the squad's five-match homestand.
