BIG EAST Release
NEW YORK - For the first time since joining the BIG EAST Conference, Marquette has placed four players on the men's golf all-conference team: Hunter Eichhorn, Matt Murlick and Oliver Farrell on the first team, and Austin Kendziorski on the second team.
Announcements of the 2017-18 All-BIG EAST Men's Golf teams were made by the league Friday, prior to the start of the conference championship which gets under way on Sunday at Callawassie Island G.C. in Okatie, South Carolina. Major awards (player of the year, freshman of the year, coaching staff of the year) are announced following the championship.
Eichhorn has impressed in his freshman season, earning the top seed among individuals at the BIG EAST Championship by posting a 71.81 scoring average (0.27 vs. par) that would be third-best in school history if his season ended today. He posted his first collegiate win with a 9-under-par 204 at the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational in October, highlighted by a final round 65 to match his season low. Eichhorn's six sub-70 rounds lead the team and he has three top-five finishes in nine starts this season.
Murlick earns his second straight all-conference honor - he was named Second Team All-BIG EAST as a freshman. He started with the year's first BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week honor after finishing with an 8-under-par 208 and a tie for fourth at the season-opening Badger Invitational. The second-seeded player at the BIG EAST Championship, Murlick is second on the team in scoring (72.27) while carding four sub-70 rounds and three top-10 finishes in nine starts.
Farrell has a spot on the All-BIG EAST Team for the third time in three collegiate seasons, including two straight years as a first team selection. He becomes the third player in program history to earn all-BIG EAST honors three times (Mike Van Sickle - 2007, '08, '09; Pat Sanchez - 2013, '14, '15). In September, Farrell raced to a 14-under-par win at the Northern Intercollegiate for his first Marquette victory - his 202 total was just three shots off the school record for a 54-hole event. With a season scoring average at 73.23, Farrell ranks seventh in the BIG EAST.
Kendziorski earned all-conference honors in just his first season as a regular starter for Marquette. He opened his season with six sub-par rounds over his first eight, including a Marquette season-low 64 (8-under-par) in the first round of the Northern Intercollegiate, one stroke off the school record low. He carded his first win at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills with a 3-under-par 213. Kendziorski (73.12) has four top-10 finishes in nine starts.
