Marquette Bests Villanova, 4-0 to Advance in BIG EAST Championship

CAYCE, S.C.--The No. 3 seed Marquette women's tennis team has advanced to the BIG EAST Championships semifinals after sweeping No. 6 Villanova, 4-0 on Friday morning at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.

The Golden Eagles (12-9) claimed the doubles point to start the match on a high note as Paula Tormos Sanchez and Andrea Amortegui took a smooth 6-1 win at the No. 2 position, while the No. 3 duo of Lesley Foe and Milica Novakovic earned a 6-4 win to clinch the point.

In singles action, Natalija Popovic turned in a 6-3, 6-1 victory on the No. 2 court, which put Marquette up, 2-0 and Fleur Eggink followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 3 spot. Novakovic clinched the match for the Golden Eagles with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 4 position, preserving the sweep for MU.

Marquette reaches the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championships for the second time in three years and will take on No. 2 seed DePaul on Saturday morning, beginning at 8 a.m. CT from South Carolina.
