ANN ARBOR, Michigan – Carrie Madden
scored the Golden Eagles' first two goals of the 2018 campaign, but the Marquette University women's soccer team fell to Michigan, 3-2, at U-M Soccer Stadium on Thursday evening.
Madden's goals came in the 27th and 51st minutes as the Golden Eagles (0-2-1) responded from an early 1-0 deficit to take their first lead of the season at 2-1. Both of Madden's goals came off assists from sophomore defender Maddie Monticello
, who played all 90 minutes at right back for Marquette.
Though both of her tallies came from roughly the same distance, Madden's first goal came on a header from Monticello, while her second she shot in after receiving a cross into the box from Monticello.
The Wolverines (3-0-0) received goals from Reilly Martin, Sarah Stratigakis and the match winner from Nicki Hernandez, who has scored in all three contests this season for U of M.
Hernandez also added an assist on the match's first goal as Martin struck on a long range shot to give the Wolverines an early edge. Stratigakis then scored after Madden's two goals to tie things before Hernandez's winner in the 84th minute.
In each of the last three matches in the series between the two squads, including tonight's contest, Michigan led 1-0 before Marquette scored the next two tallies. The Golden Eagles came out victorious 2-1 in both 2015 and 2016, and lead the all-time series with the Wolverines, 4-2.
Michigan held a 9-7 edge in shots on the night.
Freshman Katie Koker
of Racine, Wisconsin, and The Prairie School, made her first career start in the midfield for MU.
