CHICAGO, Ill. - Conference USA today named Marquette's Mo Bothwell (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead) as its Conference USA Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. Bothwell and Spakowitz led the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 victory over regional rival Northwestern and helped Marquette in its impressive 1-0 loss to top-ranked Santa Clara last week.
A Preseason All-C-USA pick and two-time All-C-USA First Team selection, Bothwell continued her solid junior campaign with a pair of impressive outings in the nonconference games last week. She picked up her fourth shutout of the season by making a save and squelching several other Wildcat scoring opportunities at Northwestern. She then made a season-high nine saves in holding top-ranked Santa Clara to only one goal. She is 7-5-2 on the season, with a 1.34 GAA, four shutouts and 54 saves.
Spakowitz found the back of the net for the second time this season at Northwestern, netting her first collegiate game-winning goal in the first half. The freshman striker has come off the bench to collect five points for Marquette. She connected against Northwestern after Katie Loughran sent a cleared Marquette corner back into the box, where Spakowitz shouldered it past the Wildcat keeper before blasting the ball into an unprotected net.
The Marquette women (7-5-2, 4-1-1) conclude their grueling, six-game road swing with a pair of important Conference USA showdowns this weekend. The opponents for this weekend, UNC Charlotte and South Florida, are both currently ahead of Marquette in the C-USA standings, and victories would go a long way in helping the Golden Eagles wrap up one of the top seeds in the C-USA Tournament.
Marquette takes on the 49ers in Charlotte at 6 p.m. (CT) on Fri., Oct. 15, before battling the Bulls in Tampa on Sun., Oct. 17, at Noon. The contests are the last regular-season road games of the season for Marquette, which ends the season with a four-game homestand starting next weekend.
