CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Marquette women?s soccer team dropped its second consecutive 1-0 game this evening, falling to Conference USA frontrunner UNC Charlotte at the 49ers? Transamerica Field. Sophomore striker Carrie Hughes scored the game?s lone goal late in the first half to help the 49ers improve to 10-3-0, including an unblemished 7-0-0 mark in league play. With the loss, Marquette falls to 7-6-2, 4-2-1.
?We played poorly and took a step back tonight,? Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. ?It looked like we were still playing (top-ranked) Santa Clara and we obviously weren?t. We sat back and were tentative and waited for them to come to us.?
After a lackluster start to the game by Marquette, Hughes put the 49ers up for good at the 37:08 mark. Following a Marquette turnover, Hughes took a serve from junior forward Meredith Mayo, got behind the Golden Eagle defenders and knocked a 10-yard deflection in off a Marquette back.
A stingy UNC Charlotte defense held firm for the remainder of the contest. Led by freshman keeper Jennifer Howell, who made four saves, the 49ers limited Marquette to only seven shots in saddling them with their third 1-0, shutout loss of the season.
Mo Bothwell made five saves while suffering her fifth loss of the season. The loss followed a 1-0 loss at #1 Santa Clara this past Sunday for the Golden Eagles.
?We realized the importance of this game, but just couldn?t get it done,? Roeders said. ?We woke up a little after the goal, but they competed for every ball and there were times when we didn?t. We can?t afford to do that against a team like UNC Charlotte.?
Marquette ends its current six-game road trip with another important C-USA clash in Tampa, Fla., on Sun., Oct. 17. The Golden Eagles will battle the host South Florida Bulls at noon (CT).
