LAST WEEK Goalkeepers Mo Bothwell (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill. / Central) shared the honors in both Marquette wins this past weekend. The duo combined to earn the Golden Eagles? second straight shutout victory on Fri., Oct. 22, as Marquette stopped Tulane 4-0. Lanette Rossini (Roseville, Minn. / Totino-Grace) netted the game-winner against the Green Wave, and she, Kelly Roethe (Wauwatosa, Wis. / DSHA) and Katherine Ward (Trumbull, Conn. / Trumbull) each had four points in the win.
Marquette came from behind to defeat Southern Miss 3-1 on Sun., Oct. 24. The Golden Eagles erased a 1-0 halftime deficit with three second-half goals to earn their tenth win of the season. Rossini and Roethe each netted another goal, with Roethe claiming the game-winner, while Anna Frisk (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Athena) tallied her first of the season to close out the scoring. Bothwell and Koenig split halves, with Koenig earning her first collegiate victory without facing a shot in the second frame.
A LOOK AT DE PAUL The Blue Demons are seeking their second-ever trip to the C-USA Tournament, but need some help to earn the eighth seed. DePaul will get the last spot in the tournament if it can beat Marquette and Southern Miss loses to Tulane on Friday. Coach Laure Schingen?s squad is currently 3-7-0 in league action and is 6-10-0 overall. DePaul scored a 1-0 overtime victory over Tulane in its last outing on Sun., Oct. 24. In her fourth year at the Chicago school, Schingen has compiled a 12-54-6 (.208) record. She has an overall record of 43-73-10 (.381) in seven years as a head coach. This year?s Blue Demons are led by senior goalie Kelly Kaiser, an All-C-USA candidate. The 6-0 keeper leads the league with 142 saves, has four shutouts and a 1.59 goals against average (GAA). Freshman midfielder Christy Young paces DePaul with 13 points on five goals and three assists. Marquette is 3-0-0 in its all-time series with DePaul and defeated the Blue Demons 2-0 in Chicago last season.
A LOOK AT PURDUE In its second season as a Division I program, Purdue has already taken great strides. After finishing 4-14-0 last season, head coach Robert Klatte?s Boilermakers are currently 7-10-0, a record that includes impressive victories over Ohio, DePaul and Illinois. Purdue suffered back-to-back 1-0 losses last weekend, falling in overtime at Indiana and at home to Oral Roberts. All-Big Ten candidate Kate Queen is atop the Boilermaker scoring list with 12 points, while Tara St. John has chipped in 10. Keeper Jocelyn Cavalier has a 2.20 GAA, three shutouts and 63 saves. Klatte has directed Purdue to a 11-24-0 (.314) mark in its first two seasons and has a 67-69-6 (.493) overall record in seven seasons as a head coach. In its first-ever Division I game last season, the Boilermakers suffered a 10-1 loss to Marquette in the teams? first-ever meeting. The Golden Eagles set program single-game records for goals, assists and largest winning margin in that contest.
HEAD COACH MARKUS ROEDERS Markus Roeders has a 55-19-9 (.717) record in his fourth season as head coach at Marquette. He has led the Golden Eagles to 10 wins or more in each of seasons. Roeders directed the Golden Eagles to back-to-back C-USA regular-season championships in 1996-97 and has guided the Golden Eagles to three consecutive trips to the C-USA Tournament championship game. Effective Sept. 1, he started a three-year term as a member of the NCAA Division I Women?s Soccer Committee. A 1990 graduate of UNC Asheville, Roeders earned the 1996 C-USA Coach of the Year Award. Prior to taking over the reigns of the women?s program, Roeders served for two years as assistant coach for the Marquette men?s team under his collegiate coach Steve Adlard. Roeders played his final two seasons at UNC Asheville and was team captain as a senior. He is assisted by Frank Pelaez and Dan Holcomb.

?NETTE GAINS Rossini broke an eight-game goal scoring drought when she found the net with the game-winner against Tulane. The senior midfielder took a pass from Roethe and launched a shot from 25 yards out that sailed over the Tulane keeper?s hands. Rossini, a co-captain, later added assists on Ward?s first goal and Roethe?s tally. She also opened the Marquette scoring against Southern Miss, receiving a serve from Ward and sending the ball back across the mouth of the goal into the left side of the net. Rossini is now among the league leaders with 18 points (7G, 4A). Among Marquette?s all-time career leaders, Rossini is fifth with 55 points and fourth in both goals (19) and assists (16).
RAY OF LIGHT Roethe took over the C-USA?s scoring lead with a six-point weekend. She now has 27 points on 10 goals and seven assists and leads Marquette in each of those categories. Roethe assisted on Rossini?s game-winning goal against Tulane before netting one of her own in the game?s 31st minute. Roethe slid on to a cross from Rossini and sent the ball into the back left corner. She later added an assist on Ward?s second goal of the contest. Roethe scored the game-winner against Southern Miss, breaking free from her mark in the box and one-timing an Ashley Spakowitz cross past the USM keeper for her tenth goal of the season. The senior co-captain now has 117 career points on 46 goals and 25 assists. She is Marquette?s all-time leader in points and goals, and is second all-time in assists. Roethe is also C-USA?s all-time leading scorer.
INSTANT OFFENSE After two goals against Tulane and as assist against Southern Miss, Ward is now second on the team with 19 points. She is tied for the team lead in assists with seven. The junior forward tallied the second goal against the Green Wave when she cleaned up a scramble in front of the net by firing a 17-yarder that hit the crossbar and dropped past the goal line. Ward concluded the scoring with her second goal of the contest on a blast from ten yards out. With another productive season, Ward has moved into fifth among Marquette?s all-time leading goal scorers.
THE MO AND KO? SHOW Keepers Bothwell and Koenig split the time between the pipes this past weekend, with Bothwell taking the first half and Koenig the second in both contests. Neither saw much action, however. They each collected one save in registering the team?s sixth shutout of the season against Tulane on Friday. Bothwell made one save against Southern Miss, while Koenig earned her first collegiate victory without making a stop. Bothwell is now 9-6-2 with 70 saves and a 1.22 GAA. Koenig is 1-0-0 with three saves and a 0.42 GAA.
GREECED LIGHTNING Frisk got a little help from the ground on her first goal of the season. The sophomore midfielder redirected Southern Miss keeper Hope Herron?s drop kick back towards the goal, where it bounced once in the box and hopped over a backtracking Herron for the third goal of the game. Frisk has started 16 of the 18 games in which she has played this year and has six points.
ONE-TIMERS Freshman Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead) tallied her second assist of the season on Roethe?s game-winner against Southern Miss ? the striker has played in all 18 games off the bench and has eight points ? junior striker Lecia Schuetz (Sarasota, Fla. / Sarasota), who was slowed by a midseason ankle injury, got her first point of the season with an assist on the game-winning goal against USM ? freshman defender Laura Kretsch (Shorewood, Wis. / Shorewood) made her third appearance of the season against Tulane.
