Marquette Volleyball Team Tops Southern Miss

Hattiesburg, MS -- The Marquette volleyball team posted a 15-6, 15-8, 15-12 win over Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg Friday evening. The victory was the second in the last three outings for the Golden Eagles and snapped a three-match losing to Southern Miss dating from 1996. With the win, Marquette upped its overall record to 12-10 and 5-6 in Conference USA action. Southern Miss fell to 12-13 overall and 3-8 in league play.
Leading the way for Marquette was senior Chris Curtin and sophomore Vesna Grbavac, both of whom recorded 17 kills. Curtin's kill total enabled her to become Marquette's all-time leader in that category. She now has 1,153 kills to her credit and surpassed Martha Meyer's (1994-97) previous standard of 1,140. The 6-foot-2 Curtin put on a hitting clinic against Southern Miss, finishing with a 56 percent attack mark. Sophomore Kelly Kaylor registered 16 digs while junior setter Liz Egasti doled out 48 assists. For the match, Marquette hit 32 percent while Southern Miss finished with a 16.5 percent effort.
Southern Miss was led Kelly Tribble and Lindsay Westendorf with 11 kills apiece.
"It was a good win for our team," said head coach Laura Farina. "Chris Curtin stepped up and played well and the team played well around her."
Marquette's next action will be Sunday (Oct. 31) when it plays at Tulane starting at 2:0 p.m.
