Last Time Out The Golden Eagles defeated the California All-Stars 74-72 on Nov. 8. It was the first exhibition game of the season for Marquette.
Like the unseasonably warm temperatures outside the Bradley Center, the visiting California All-Stars got off to a hot start, building a 17-8 lead at the 16:53 mark of the first half. The closest the Golden Eagles got was three points (25-22) with 9:53 remaining in the period. From that point, however, the California All-Stars went on a 19-9 run to build the lead to 44-31. The visitors held a 48-40 halftime behind 15 points from Mack Tuck.
Marquette opened the second half with a quick 8-0 spurt to knot the score at 48-48. After that, there were seven ties, the latest coming with 1:07 left and the score at 72-72. It stayed that way until Oluoma Nnamaka hit a driving layup with two seconds left to give Marquette the win.
The Golden Eagles shot 52.5% from the field and outrebounded the California All-Stars 39-25. After allowing the team of former collegiate players to shoot 51.4% (18-35) from the floor in the first half, Marquette shut down the visitors? offense, and allowed them to shoot just 8-24 (33.3%) in the second frame.
John Cliff led all scorers with 19 points. Nnamaka turned in a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. John Mueller rounded out Marquette?s double-figure scorers with 10 points. He also chipped in eight rebounds.
Tuck was held scoreless in the second half, going 0-4 from the floor. Willie Farley tied for Tuck team scoring honors with 15 points.
Offense Outburst The Golden Eagles? 74 points in their Nov. 8 exhibition game surpassed the team?s point total in 24 contests from the 1998-99 season.
Injury Update Junior Greg Clausen will miss the first portion of the season after undergoing surgery on Friday, Oct. 29, to repair a torn medial meniscus in his left knee.
Clausen has appeared in 56 consecutive games over the last two seasons. That is the longest active streak on this year?s team. In 1998-99 he averaged 3.4 points and 3.5 rebounds and made 12 starts.
Oh Yes They Call It A Streak Marquette has made at least one three-point field goal in 318 consecutive games. The last game without a trey was against Wake Forest on Feb. 2, 1989.
