MILWAUKEE -
A LOOK BACK AT 1999 Markus Roeders? 1999 Golden Eagles women?s soccer team (16-7-2) set new standards for the Marquette program, winning its first-ever Conference USA Tournament title and appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in its seven-year history. Not only did the Golden Eagles earn their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, but they also made their mark on the national scene by knocking off #21 Missouri 3-2 in four overtimes before giving #8 Clemson ?all they could handle? in a 1-0 loss in the NCAA Tournament Second Round. The 16 wins equals the single-season high set in 1996
LAST WEEK AT THE NCAA TOURNAMENT In its first-ever NCAA Tournament game on Wed., Nov. 10, Marquette knocked of nationally-ranked Missouri 3-2 in overtime when sophomore midfielder Amy Hnatow (Fairview, N.C. / A.C. Reynolds) knocked in the first goal of her career in the game?s 142nd minute. The Golden Eagles upended the 21st-ranked Tigers in the fourth overtime session after losing a two-goal lead in the second half. However, a tight Marquette defense clamped down with the score tied, allowing Hnatow to play the hero. Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa / North) and Erin Morgan (Stevens Points, Wis. / SPASH) provided Marquette?s first two goals.
The Golden Eagles advanced to face #8 Clemson in an NCAA Tournament Second Round contest on Sat., Nov. 13, in Clemson, S.C. Marquette battled the Tigers to a draw with an exemplary defensive effort for 89 minutes before allowing Julie Augustyniak to get loose and fire a 25-yard blast that found the back of the net with only 41 seconds remaining in regulation. Marquette keeper Mo Bothwell (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) looked sharp all evening, making five saves.
A LOOK BACK AT THE C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP The Golden Eagles earned their first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Conference USA Championship with a 2-1 overtime victory over UNC Charlotte on Sat., Nov. 6. Morgan?s bending game-winner in the 93rd minute sewed up the league?s automatic NCAA bid and earned the senior striker Most Valuable Forward honors at the tournament. Gordon netted MU?s first goal and Most Valuable Midfielder Kelly Roethe (Wauwatosa, Wis. / DSHA) directed an MU attack that controlled play for a majority of the contest after allowing a 49er goal only 41 seconds into the contest.
Marquette advanced to the title game with a pair of convincing wins, knocking off UAB 2-1 and Southern Miss 6-0 in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Junior striker Katherine Ward (Trumbull, Conn. / Trumbull) netted the game-winner in both contests. Bothwell went 3-0 at the tournament, allowing only two goals and making eight saves.
HEAD COACH MARKUS ROEDERS Markus Roeders concluded his fourth season as head coach at Marquette with a 61-20-9 (.728) record . He led the Golden Eagles to victory in their first-ever NCAA Tournament action last week following Marquette?s win in the C-USA Championship Game last Saturday. Roeders has led the Golden Eagles to 10 wins or more in each of his four seasons. He directed the Golden Eagles to back-to-back C-USA regular-season championships in 1996-97 and has guided the Golden Eagles to four consecutive trips to the C-USA Tournament championship game. Effective Sept. 1, Roeders started a three-year term as a member of the NCAA Division I Women?s Soccer Committee. A 1990 graduate of UNC Asheville, Roeders earned the 1996 C-USA Coach of the Year Award. Prior to taking over the reigns of the women?s program, he served for two years as assistant coach for the Marquette men?s team under his collegiate coach Steve Adlard. Roeders played his final two seasons at UNC Asheville and was team captain as a senior. He is assisted by Frank Pelaez and Dan Holcomb.
IN THE POLLS Three Marquette opponents were ranked in the national polls last week: Santa Clara was ranked #1 by both Soccer America and the NSCAA. NCAA Tournament opponent Clemson was tied for #8 by the NSCAA and was #9 by Soccer America, while first-round foe Missouri was #25 by the NSCAA.
Marquette was #9 again in last week?s NSCAA Great Lakes Region Rankings. Other NSCAA regional rankings: Missouri was #4 and Saint Louis was #10 in the Central, Illinois was #5 and Wisconsin #8 in the Great Lakes, Clemson was #3 and UNC Charlotte was #9 in the Southeast, and Santa Clara was #1 in the West.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP The Clemson game marked the final career match for the Golden Eagles? four senior co-captains. Kate Loughran (Cincinnati, Ohio / Ursuline), Lanette Rossini (Roseville, Minn. / Totino-Grace), Morgan and Roethe have helped turn around a program that was 21-28-8 in the three seasons prior to their arrival. Marquette compiled a 61-20-9 record in their four seasons. Each of the four seniors started all 25 contests this season, leading the Golden Eagles to their first-ever C-USA Championship and NCAA Tournament. Morgan, Roethe and Rossini each earned All-C-USA postseason honors and tied for the team-lead with three game-winning goals apiece.
RAY OF LIGHT Roethe finished the regular season as the league?s leading scorer this year and she added a goal in Marquette?s C-USA quarterfinal win over UAB. The center midfielder, selected to her fourth straight All-C-USA First Team this season, concluded the year with 33 points on a team-high 13 goals and seven assists. She started all 25 games. The senior co-captain had 123 career points on 49 goals and 25 assists and started 89 of the 90 games in which she played. She is Marquette?s all-time leader in points and goals, and is second all-time in assists. Roethe is also C-USA?s all-time leading scorer.
POINT FORWARD Senior forward Morgan started all 25 games for Marquette. The workhorse striker had career-high 20 points on eight goals and four assists. She earned the first league honor of her career at the conclusion of the regular season, being named to the All-C-USA Third Team. Morgan netted MU?s second goal against Missouri in the NCAA Tournament when she cleaned up a scramble in front of the net and sent a blast into the back of the net from inside the six. That goal gave her 65 career points and moved her into second place on Marquette?s all-time career scoring list. She is also ranked among Marquette?s all-time career leaders with 24 goals (third) and 17 assists (fifth).
?NETTE GAINS Rossini continued her late-season surge with an assist on Morgan?s goal in Columbia. She also had a C-USA record-tying two assists against Southern Miss in the C-USA semifinals. Rossini concluded the regular season with eight points in the last four games and had career-highs with eight goals, eight assists and 24 points for the year. She was named to the All-C-USA Third Team. Among Marquette?s all-time career leaders, Rossini is fourth with 61 points, tied for fourth with 20 goals and third with 20 assists.
SURPRISE SAVIOR Hnatow was an unlikely hero for the Golden Eagles at Missouri. The speedy 5-3 midfielder had never scored a goal in her collegiate career before connecting from 24 yards out at the 141:13 mark to send Marquette to the second round. She was playing center midfield, her normal spot, at the time, but also saw some minutes at the outside midfield against Mizzou. Hnatow appeared in 23 games this season and that dramatic, game-winning goal accounted for her only points of the season.
ONE MO? TIME Between the pipes for Marquette for a majority of the action this season was Bothwell, the 5-6 junior keeper who started all 25 contests for the Golden Eagles. She turned in a strong performance against Clemson, making five saves, after registering six saves and logging all 141 minutes of action in the first-round win over Missouri. A two-time All-C-USA First Team pick, Bothwell was 15-7-2 with nine shutouts, 92 saves and a 1.07 GAA. She is second all-time at Marquette with 217 saves and is Marquette?s all-time leader with 28 career shutouts.
K?S CHOICE After being named to the All-C-USA Third team following the regular season, Ward was hot in the C-USA tournament, netting the game-winners in Marquette?s first two games. The junior striker tallied a career-high 24 points this season, good for second on the team. She had eight goals and eight assists. Ward also moved into the ranks of Marquette?s career leaders this season and is tied for fourth all-time with 20 career goals.
DEFENSE WINS GAMES Senior co-captain Loughran and juniors Rhegan Hyypio (St. Petersburg, Fla. / Lakewood) and Heather O?Neil (Shoreview, Minn. / Totino-Grace) are the leaders of a Marquette defense that allowed just over a goal per game and recorded nine shutouts this season. During Marquette?s nine-game winning streak that ended Saturday night, the trio helped the Golden Eagles hold opponents to only five goals.
All three defenders were in the opening lineup for all 25 games this season. Hyypio and O?Neil garnered All-C-USA Second Team honors, while Loughran scored a career-high five points this season.
IN THE MIDDLE Joining Roethe and Rossini in the midfield this season were junior Melissa Moffatt (Waukesha, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) and sophomore Anna Frisk (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Athena). Both players netted goals against Southern Miss in the C-USA Tournament semifinals. Moffatt started all 25 games, starting the season at stopper before moving to center midfield. She had eight points on two goals and four assists.
Frisk also tallied eight points on two goals and four assists. She started 23 of the 25 games in which she played at left outside midfield.
FRESHMAN FINDS A pair of first-year strikers supplied some potent scoring punch off the bench this season. C-USA All-Freshmen pick Gordon and classmate Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead) played major roles for the Golden Eagles in their debut seasons. Gordon led the Marquette newcomers with 20 points after netting the opening goal in the NCAA first-round victory over Mizzou. She also had the game-tying goal in the C-USA title contest. Spakowitz added 12 points on four goals and four assists. Both tallied goals in Marquette?s C-USA semifinal win over Southern Miss.
Also making a fine impression in their debut seasons:
Right outside back Diana Detrie (Green Bay, Wis. / Notre Dame Academy) broke into the opening lineup against Memphis on Sept. 24 and remained in a starting role at right outside back for the remainder of the season. She collected two assists.
Anne Dalecky (Wauwatosa, Wis. / East) and Kristin Halley (Overland Park, Kan. / St. Thomas Aquinas) both logged significant minutes at the center midfield and back positions. Dalecky appeared in 20 games, while Halley totaled three points on a goal and an assist. Erin Maysent (Ames, Iowa / Ames Community) and defender Jaime Krofta (Dousman, Wis. / Kettle Moraine) also both played their way into the regular rotation. Maysent saw significant action at both the outside midfield and at striker against Missouri and finished the regular season with one point. Krofta started once and appeared in 18 games, registering one assist.
Keeper Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville) shared in six of the Golden Eagles? shutouts and allowed only one goal in 256 minutes en route to a 1-0-0 mark. She had a 0.35 GAA and made three saves.
AROUND THE NET Several other Golden Eagles played roles during Marquette?s record-setting season: Rounding out the Marquette roster at the NCAA Tournament were sophomore midfielders Jenny Strachota (Milwaukee, Wis. / DSHA) and Stephanie Welch (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington). Strachota netted her first goal of the season and added an assist in the C-USA semifinals against Southern Miss. She concluded the season with four points and started five of the 20 games in which she played. The versatile Welch provided a strong left foot and also saw action in the back field. She had seven points on the season, including two goals scored against UW-Green Bay on Sept. 12.
Defender Dana Schierman (Shoreview, Minn. / Totino-Grace) had one goal and started four of the 12 games in which she played. Rebecca Myers (Bettendorf, Iowa / Bettendorf), Lecia Schuetz (Sarasota, Fla. / Sarasota) and Jill Vendetti (Franklin, Mass. / Franklin) each saw time at the striker spots throughout the season. Jaime Erickson (Milwaukee, Wis. / University School), Michelle George (Madison, Wis. / Edgewood) and Laura Kretsch (Shorewood, Wis. / Shorewood) each made their Marquette debut this season.
C-USA LEADERS Several Golden Eagles ranked among the C-USA regular-season statistical leaders.
