Women's Soccer Opens C-USA Tournament Against UAB

THE WEEK AHEAD Markus Roeders? Marquette women?s soccer team (12-6-2, 8-2-1) hopes to carry the momentum from its regular-season-ending five-game winning streak into this week?s Conference USA Championship in Farmers Branch, Texas, just outside of Dallas. In a quarterfinal match-up on Wed., Nov. 3, the third-seeded Golden Eagles battle #4 UAB at 8 p.m. (CT). Should Marquette win its quarterfinal game, the Golden Eagles would meet the winner of Wednesday?s #1 Saint Louis / #8 Southern Miss contest in a semifinal game at 8 p.m. on Thu., Nov. 4. The C-USA Championship Game is slated for Sat., Nov. 6, at 1:30.
LAST WEEK With a pair of wins last weekend, the Golden Eagles wrapped up a tie for second place in the C-USA regular-season standings and ended the season with a five-game winning streak, which tied their season-high. At Senior Night on Fri., Oct. 29, the Golden Eagles shut down DePaul 4-0 to close their C-USA schedule. Marquette was led to the victory by its four senior co-captains, as Lanette Rossini (Roseville, Minn. / Totino-Grace), Kelly Roethe (Wauwatosa, Wis. / DSHA) and Kate Loughran (Cincinnati, Ohio / Ursuline) provided all the goals. It was the first goal of Loughran?s career. Keepers Mo Bothwell (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill. / Central) shared in their third-straight win.
On Sun., Oct. 31, Bothwell went the distance in recording her eighth shutout of the season in Marquette?s 1-0 victory over Purdue. The junior keeper was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week for her hand in Marquette?s back-to-back weekend shutouts. Freshman Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa / North) finished a break-away for the game-winning goal against the Boilermakers.
A LOOK AT UAB Coach Paul Harbin?s Lady Blazers finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-9-1 and finished 7-3-1 in C-USA play following a 2-0 victory over Memphis on Fri., Oct. 29. In its most recent outing this past Sunday, UAB shut-out cross-state rival Auburn 3-0. Harbin, in his fourth year in Birmingham, has a 42-34-6 (.549) mark with the Blazers. His eight-year overall record is 79-58-8 (.572). Sophomore midfielder Denise Peters led UAB with 16 points, while freshman striker Adrienne Suffridge chipped in 13 points. First-year goalie Lisa Nowaslawski most often got the starting call for the Blazers and had an 8-7-0 record with five shutouts, 63 saves and a 1.39 goals against average (GAA). The Golden Eagles hold a 4-1 lead in the all-time series with UAB. In the teams? regular-season meeting in Milwaukee, Marquette controlled play for a majority of the game and scored a 1-0 win. Senior Erin Morgan (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area) netted the game-winner, while Bothwell made one save in registering the shutout.
HEAD COACH MARKUS ROEDERS Markus Roeders has a 57-19-9 (.724) record in his fourth season as head coach at Marquette. He has led the Golden Eagles to 10 wins or more in each of seasons. Roeders directed the Golden Eagles to back-to-back C-USA regular-season championships in 1996-97 and has guided the Golden Eagles to three consecutive trips to the C-USA Tournament championship game. Effective Sept. 1, he started a three-year term as a member of the NCAA Division I Women?s Soccer Committee. A 1990 graduate of UNC Asheville, Roeders earned the 1996 C-USA Coach of the Year Award. Prior to taking over the reigns of the women?s program, Roeders served for two years as assistant coach for the Marquette men?s team under his collegiate coach Steve Adlard. Roeders played his final two seasons at UNC Asheville and was team captain as a senior. He is assisted by Frank Pelaez and Dan Holcomb.
IN THE POLLS One Marquette opponent was ranked in the national polls this week: Santa Clara is ranked #1 by both Soccer America and the NSCAA.
Marquette is #9 again in this week?s NSCAA Great Lakes Region Rankings. Other NSCAA regional rankings: Saint Louis is #6 in the Central, Wisconsin is #7 and Illinois #8 in the Great Lakes, UNC Charlotte is #9 in the Southeast, and Santa Clara is #1 in the West.
RAY OF LIGHT Roethe extended her lead in the C-USA scoring race with the pair of goals against DePaul. Her regular-season totals included 31 points, 12 goals and seven assists. Against the Blue Demons, the center midfielder first scored off a cross from 11 yards out. Her second goal came when Loughran sent a DePaul clearing pass back into the box, where Roethe collected it and sent a 13-yard blast into the back of the net. The senior co-captain now has 121 career points on 48 goals and 25 assists. She is Marquette?s all-time leader in points and goals, and is second all-time in assists. Roethe is also C-USA?s all-time leading scorer.
?NETTE GAINS Rossini continued her late-season surge with the game-winning goal against the Blue Demons. The outside midfielder got into the Blue Demons? penalty area, where she took a cross from Ashley Spakowitz and sent it into the net from 10 yards out. Rossini concluded the season with eight points in the last four games and set career-highs with eight goals and 21 points for the year. She concluded the regular season among the league leaders with 21 points on eight goals and five assists. Among Marquette?s all-time career leaders, Rossini is fifth with 58 points, fourth with 20 goals and tied for third with 18 assists.
FRESHMAN FLASH Gordon finished the season among the league?s top freshmen with 14 points and six goals. She finished fifth on the Golden Eagles? scoring list. With the decisive score against Purdue, Gordon tied Roethe and Rossini for the team-lead with three game-winning goals. The speedy striker got behind the Boilermaker defense in the top left corner of the box where she received a long serve from Stephanie Welch, settled the ball and sent it past the Purdue keeper to the far post.
ONE MO? TIME Despite making only three saves in the weekend contests, Bothwell earned the C-USA defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season for leading the Golden Eagles to a pair of shutout wins. She is now 11-6-2 with 73 saves, eight shutouts and a 1.11 GAA.
MASTERLOUGH Loughran closed out the scoring against DePaul with a penalty kick goal at the 68:12 mark of the second half. She beat DePaul keeper Kelly Kaiser high to the right for the first goal of her collegiate career, a span of 64 games for the senior defender. Marquette was awarded the penalty kick after Anna Frisk was dragged down in the box by a Blue Demon defender. Loughran had earlier collected an assist on Roethe?s second goal of the evening. She has started all 20 games this season and has a career-high five points.
ONE-TIMERS Koenig completed the regular season with a 1-0-0 mark, three saves, three shutouts and a 0.38 GAA in eight games ? freshman Ashley Spakowitz (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead) collected her third assist of the season on Rossini?s game-winner against DePaul ? the striker has played in all 20 games off the bench and is second among MU freshmen with nine points ? freshman defender Diana Detrie (Green Bay, Wis. / Notre Dame Academy), who has started the past 12 games, also tallied an assist on the decisive goal against DePaul and has two points on the year ? junior striker Katherine Ward (Trumbull, Conn. / Trumbull) has started 19 of the 20 games this season after providing instant offense off the bench last year ? she had an assist on Roethe?s first goal on Friday and finished the regular season third on the team with a career-high-tying 20 points on six goals and a team-high eight assists ? Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Welch (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) assisted on Gordon?s goal against Purdue and has a career-high seven points this season.
C-USA LEADERS Several Golden Eagles ranked among the C-USA regular-season statistical leaders. Roethe led the league with 31 points, was second with 12 goals, tied for fourth with seven assists and tied for eighth with 45 shots. Rossini finished tied for seventh with 21 points and her eight goals tied her for fifth in the league. Ward was 10th with 20 points and tied for second with eight assists. Bothwell was second with eight shutouts, fourth with a 1.11 GAA and seventh with 73 saves. Koenig tied for tenth with three shutouts.
Among the team leaders, Marquette led the league with 147 points, 48 goals and 51 assists. The Golden Eagles are finished fifth with 257 shots. Defensively, the Golden Eagles are second with a 1.01 GAA, tied for second with eight shutouts and ninth with 76 saves.
