MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women?s soccer team is headed to Columbia, Mo., for its first-ever NCAA Tournament game Wednesday, as the Golden Eagles are paired up with #25 Missouri in the opening round. Marquette earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with its 2-1 overtime win over UNC Charlotte in the Conference USA Championship Game yesterday and officially received the bid this evening. The Golden Eagles (15-6-2) will battle the Tigers in Mizzou?s Walton Stadium at 2:30 p.m. on Wed., Nov. 10.
?We?re thrilled to be in the tournament,? Marquette assistant coach Frank Pelaez said. ?We?ve been working towards this for four years and we have the best team that we have ever had here. They are a mature squad who have been to four conference tournament finals and that experience will help out.?
Missouri (14-7-2) received its first-ever NCAA berth after finishing as the runner-up in the Big 12 Conference following a 2-1 loss to #4 Nebraska in their league championship game yesterday. The Tigers feature a high-powered offense led by strikers Nikki Thole, a junior All-American candidate, and Erin Grimsley.
The winner of the Marquette/Missouri opening-round game will advance to meet Clemson in the second round. The Tigers are seeded seventh in the NCAA Tournament after finishing as the runner-up in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
